Pathology

Pathology includes the costs of equipment and supplies used in performing a test or examination as well as the performance of the test and the professional evaluation and report.

The collection and/or handling fee of a specimen is considered content of service to the laboratory/surgical procedure and/or the level of service being performed, regardless of whether the physician bills for the laboratory tests or if the specimen is sent to an outside laboratory.    

Specimen collection and handling codes deny as content to service when billed alone or with other charges.
